Problem -
KNOCKING NOISE WITHIN STEERING SYSTEM
The customer complains of a rattle or knock when turning the vehicle on uneven surfaces. This may be diagnosed as steering rack rattle.
Cause
A hydraulic knock within the power assisted steering system.
Action
New power assisted steering oil return cooler pipe assemblies have been developed which provide improved hydraulic damping to eradicate the rattle / knock. These improved pipes can now be fitted to customer complaint vehicles prior to the above VINs. On RHD vehicles, only the return cooler assembly requires replacement. Refer to PARTS INFORMATION for details.
- Replace the return cooler assembly as detailed in Workshop Manual repair number 57.15.11.
On LHD vehicles, it is also necessary to replace the high pressure feed pipe assembly due to small changes in the pipe clipping arrangement. Refer to PARTS INFORMATION for details of LHD derivatives.
- Fit a new high pressure assembly following the same installation as the original.
- Replace the return cooler assembly as detailed in Workshop Manual repair number 57.15.11, with the following exceptions:
a) Fit new ‘P’ clip PYC10087 to the metal mid section of the return cooler pipe in the orientation shown in illustration 1.

b) Attach the new ‘P’ clip to the support bracket which is part of the high pressure assembly using screw FS106167L, as shown in illustration 2.

NOTE: Petrol installation is shown, diesel is similar.
- Tighten pipe connections to a torque of 22Nm.
- Bleed the steering system as detailed in Workshop Manual repair number 57.15.02.
