ROCKING MOVEMENT ON STEERING WHEEL
The customer complains of fore and aft movement of the steering wheel rim.
Cause
Movement between steering wheel and inner steering column taper seat during high torque steering inputs.
Action
Where a customer complaint of the above is confirmed, apply Loctite 270 Studlock to the steering column taper as follows:
1. Centralise the steering wheel with the road wheels in the straight ahead position.
2. Apply tape to the steering wheel and nacelle and mark both to ensure correct alignment on reassembly.
3. Remove the steering wheel. Workshop Manual repair number 57.60.01 refers.
4. Clean the taper seat area of the steering wheel and inner column, (arrowed in illustration).
5. Apply a bead of Loctite 270 Studlock to the column taper as shown.
CAUTION: Care must be taken to avoid the application of Loctite to the splines of the column or steering wheel as this may result in difficult removal of the steering wheel at a later date.
6. Refit the steering wheel ensuring correct alignment with tape marks.
7. Tighten the steering wheel nut to a torque of 20Nm and remove tape from steering wheel and nacelle.
NOTE: This is a higher torque figure than currently specified in the Workshop Manual and is recommended for use on customer complaint vehicles.
