Problem -
ENGINE MISFIRE OR DIFFICULT / PROLONGED STARTING - FUEL FILTER
Cause
The in-tank fuel pump assembly incorporates a fuel filter. On vehicles prior to the above VIN, the filter internal seal may split, resulting in reduced fuel pressure.
Action
On customer complaint of engine misfire and/or poor starting, refer to the following to determine the problem cause and correct repair procedure.
FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST.
1. Disconnect battery earth lead.
2. Position absorbent cloth beneath fuel pipe to catch spillage.
WARNING: The spilling of fuel is unavoidable during this operation. Ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent fire and explosion.
3. Disconnect fuel pipe from inlet manifold.
4. Connect adaptor LRT-19-010 to pressure gauge LRT-19-004.
5. Connect adaptor LRT-19-010 and pressure gauge LRT-19-004 to inlet manifold and fuel pipe.
6. Connect battery earth lead.
7. Start engine. Fuel pressure at idle = 3.5 bar ± 0.2 bar.
If the fuel pressure measured at operation 7 is less than that specified, a split fuel pump filter seal is indicated. Continue as follows:
8. Remove the fuel pump assembly and replace the existing filter with new filter kit WFL000010.
- Refer to Workshop Manual (5 th Edition), repair number 19.25.02 for the replacement procedure.
- Use a new sealing ring ESR3806 when refitting the fuel pump assembly to the fuel tank.
9. Confirm that fuel pressure is now satisfactory.
