Freelander - Stopping Power - Brakes

Stopping Power

Freelander's brake system is as fit for purpose as the rest of the vehicle. An advanced electronic anti-lock brake system, combined with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Hill Descent Control and Traction Control, is now standard on all models, giving Freelander unique advantages off-road as well as on-road.

Revised System

The improved braking system now has vented front disc brakes with larger calipers and larger drum brakes at the rear.

ABS: Steering and Braking more safely

Whilst active safety will always depend ultimately on the skill , experience and foresight of the driver, Freelander's advanced electronic anti-lock brake system can provide vital assistance in an emergency. Equally important, the system is always available - at any speed, on or off-road.

Steering Control

When a wheel locks it has lost traction, making it difficult or impossible either to stop or to steer. ABS senses a slipping wheel and brakes the wheel to the limit possible before grip is lost, helping to maintain steering control.

4-channel: grip on split traction surfaces Freelander's sophisticated 4-channel ABS provides sensing and braking control on all four wheels and so is capable of performing well on surfaces where one side may be slippery, the other dry. The system not only applies braking control to wheels which are slipping, but also regulates pressure to the wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle where necessary to maintain stability.

Control and Stability

In order to maintain vehicle stability, the system divides the four wheels into two diagonal pairs for more accurate sensing of vehicle reference speed.

This enables ABS protection to be maintained in the unlikely event if a sensing fault in one wheel. If a fault does occur, the driver is alerted immediately.

Grip off-road

Freelander's ABS system, in conjunction with the optimised steering geometry, helps to maintain steering control and improves stopping performance both off-road and on snow, allowing emergency manoeuvres to be more safely carried out.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)

Electronic Brake Force Distribution is now standard on all new Freelanders. EBD balances the braking performance between the front and rear axles for maximum braking efficiency and reduced risk of rear wheel lock, compared to mechanical brake force distribution systems. To further improve efficiency, vented front disc brakes - with larger calipers - and a larger rear drum brake have been introduced..
